Premium Plaza is one of the largest malls in Medellín and is rather unique with its entire third floor dedicated to entertainment.
It opened in December 2007, with over 1.2 million square feet of space, which made it the largest mall in Medellín until the Santafé mall opened in 2010.
Premium Plaza was built in an urban development zone and was one of the landmark projects in this area.
It is located along the border between the El Poblado and La Candelaria comunas. Looking at a map, Premium Plaza is located in La Candelaria similar to the nearby San Diego mall.
The Shops in Premium Plaza
The anchor tenants of Premium Plaza are Jumbo, Royal Films and Bodytech.
Premium Plaza has about 350 shops, which include stores selling clothes, shoes, home furnishings, mattresses, eye-care and several other categories.
Jumbo is a large Chilean supermarket chain that also sells electronics, clothes, kitchen items and home furnishings similar to a Walmart in the United States.
Make sure to sign up for Jumbo Puntos (points). This is a frequent shopper program where you accumulate points that can be used to help purchase items on sale in the future. However, to sign up you need a cedula.
A Jumbo savings tip is that the store has sales weekly that are posted on a sign at the entrance. Frequently these sales are buy one item; get the second same item for 50 percent off. The store also frequently has sales on electronics and appliances.
Royal Films in Premium Plaza is a movie theater with six screens located on the third floor of the mall. Royal Films shows movies in Spanish as well as some in English with Spanish subtitles.
Royal Films is a movie theater chain in Colombia with movie theaters in over 20 cities. In Medellín, Royal Films has two locations: Premium Plaza and on La 65.
Bodytech is a chain of high-end gyms located throughout Colombia’s major cities.
Bodytech in Premium Plaza is located on the third floor and offers scenic views looking towards Cerro Nutibara and Laureles. Dave previously wrote about joining Bodytech in Premium Plaza last year.
Bodytech currently has 10 locations in Medellín, some are standalone and some are located in malls.
Food Options
The main food court in Premium Plaza is located on the second floor. On the third floor you will find several restaurant options.
Between these two floors you have over 40 different food options to choose from. You will find several of the typical fast food places in Medellín here including Asia Wok, Dogger, El Corral, Frisby, Qbano, Subway and Tacos&Bar-BQ.
You will also find several restaurants and bars in Premium Plaza, including Asados Doña Rosa, Beer Store, Cocoloco, Crepes & Waffles, El Patio de Lupe, Hot Sports, J&C Delicias, Las Vegas Burger Bar, MartinMARTINI, Santa Guadalupe and The Corner.
Entertainment Options
The entire third floor of Premium Plaza is dedicated to entertainment.
Besides the six-screen Royal Films movie theater, restaurants and bars and the Bodytech gym, you will also find a casino (with its own karaoke bar), go-karts, an amusement area for kids with games, three tennis courts and a soccer field.
Some of the malls in Medellín have casinos and Premium Plaza has the sizable Allégre Casino on the third floor.
The 25,000 square foot casino has 490 gaming machines and 25 table games including Black Jack, Baccarat and Texas Holdem.
Premium Plaza is the only mall I am aware of in Medellín that has go-karts.
There are two go-kart tracks, one for smaller kids and the other for adults and older kids.
The Africa Parque de Diversiones is an 18,500 square foot play area for kids that is full of video games and other attractions such as bungee jumping.
Conclusions
Pro’s – It’s one of the largest malls in Medellín with a Jumbo for groceries, a six-screen Royal Films movie theater, some fun things to do for kids and adults, a convenient food court and many shops with good prices.
Con’s – It can be pretty busy, especially on the weekends or holidays.
My Verdict – With the mall’s focus on entertainment it is a rather unique mall in Medellín. The entertainment options and large number of small stores make it worth a visit.
How to Get There – You can take the Metro to the Industriales station and Premium Plaza is located about four blocks away. If you are located along the Belén Metroplús line you can take Line 2, which has a stop right across the street from Premium Plaza.
