This concert should have Medellín pretty festive in the month after its biggest festival, La Feria de las Flores.

September is the beginning of the low season, but there are still a couple of big events here — Beyoncé coming for a concert, Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín facing off in a fútbol clasico — and a few others in the city.

I’m sure you’ll find one to enjoy!

Concerts

Nengo Flow

8 PM, Friday, Sept 6 at Palmahia

This popular Puerto Rican reggaeton singer is taking over Palmahia next Friday. General admission tickets are 44,000 pesos ($23).

If you don’t have your ticket already, expect to pay at least 400,000.

Festivals

17th Annual International Jazz Festival

Wednesday, Sept. 4 – 14 at Universidad de Medellin, Olaya Herrera Airport, and Plaza Mayor

Jazz aficionados will be happy this month, as the Medellin International Jazz Festival celebrates its 17th year running. Artists from Cuba, Brazil, Italy, Puerto Rico and Colombia will be performing around the city.

Check out the full schedule here.

Fiesta del Libro y Cultura (Book and Culture Festival)

Friday, Sept. 13 – 22 at Jardin Botanico

Stop by the Botanical Gardens during this book and culture festival to enjoy a unique program of events, including concerts. Book vendors are set up everywhere, but most offer only books in Spanish. There’s plenty of beer and food available too!

Medellin Gourmet (Restaurant Month)

Sept. 1 – 30 at Various Restaurants

Medellin Gourmet is a new, month long event offering dinners discounted rates at some of the city’s top restaurants.

The promotion is similar to “Restaurant Week” in major American cities like New York and Washington, DC, but here it’ll last a whole month!

Diners at any of the 38 participating restaurants can order a set menu including an appetizer, main course, and dessert for either 35,000 pesos ($18) or 55,000 pesos ($28), depending on the restaurant.

The list of restaurants offers something for everyone. We highly recommend the following: La Provincia, Delaire, and Hato Viejo.

Sports

The Color Run (5k)

Sunday, Sept. 1

This Sunday, the happiest (and craziest) 5k race in the world will also be taking place in Medellin.

From the USA Color Run website:

The Color Run™, also known as the ‘Happiest 5k on the Planet’, is a unique paint race that celebrates healthiness, happiness and individuality.

Less about your 10-minute-mile and more about having the time of your life, The Color Run is a five-kilometer, un-timed race in which thousands of participants are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. The fun continues at the finish line with a gigantic “Finish Festival,” using more colored powder to create happiness and lasting memories, not to mention millions of vivid color combinations. Trust us, this is the best post-5k party on the planet!

With only two rules, the idea is easy to follow: 1) Wear white at the starting line, and 2) Finish plastered in color.

If you’re interested in running in this event, there’s still time to join the fun. The cost to enter is 50,000 pesos ($26), and you can find more details on the Medellin Color Run page.

Marathon of Flowers (42k)

Sunday, Sept. 8

If you survive The Color Run, or simply want a greater challenge, the Medellin Marathon is taking place the following week.

Meet Ups

Medellín Living Reader Meet Up

7 PM, Tuesday, Sept. 3, at the new Peru Mix location in Laureles

These meet-ups are a great opportunity to meet other travelers, expats, and Colombians. If you’re new to the city, it’s also a good chance to ask questions, and share your observations with a captive audience.

RSVP here, and enjoy a free pisco sour when you arrive at the event!

National Holidays

Dia de Amor y Amistad (Love and Friendship Day)

September 15

Colombians celebrate their version of Valentine’s Day, called Love and Friendship Day, on September 15. If you’re dating a paisa, remember to make plans for this special day!
