Barichara is considered by many to be the prettiest pueblo in Colombia. In 1978, it was declared a National Monument on account of its architectural heritage dating back hundreds of years.
While I will say it is one of the best-preserved pueblos in Colombia, I can’t go so far as to say it’s the prettiest. Guatape, Salento, and Jardin are also up there in my book.
I took a short bus ride from San Gil to visit, but unfortunately for me it was a Monday, when most restaurants and shops are closed. The heat of the day also ensures few people are walking around in the late morning and afternoon.
If you want to get a real sense of Barichara, I recommend spending the night. It’s far prettier a pueblo than San Gil, and there are lots of restaurants around to feed hungry travelers.
