Inside Pizza en Leña

Pizza en Leña was introduced to me by another reader of the Medellín Living website who lives in Sabaneta. It turns out this pizzeria is considered by locals in the area to have the best pizza in Sabaneta.

Pizza en Leña is a small pizzeria that specializes in thin-crust pizza, which is cooked in a brick oven.

Pizza en Leña is owned by a Dutch guy, who bought the pizzeria from another Dutch guy five years ago. The small pizzeria in Sabaneta has been open about eight years.

With all the growth in Sabaneta, on weekdays Pizza en Leña is as busy as it used to be on the weekends five years ago. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night the small pizzeria is normally packed so you may have to wait for a table.

Our Recent Experience at Pizza en Leña

I have been to Pizza en Leña several times for dinner with my Colombian wife. The last time we weren’t that hungry and shared a medium Amantes de la Carne (meat lovers) pizza with Pepperoni, chicken, bacon, “special meat” and mushrooms.

The ingredients were fresh and the pizza was cooked perfectly and was very tasty with the thin crust. Cost of the medium pizza was 21,500 pesos ($6.78).

A previous time we had shared a large pizza that was half Hawaiian and half Amantes de la Carne, that was also perfectly cooked, with a cost of 28,500 pesos ($9.00).

My impression is that Pizza en Leña is a small pizzeria that hasn’t been discovered by many foreigners.  But it has one of the better pizzas in the Medellín metropolitan area and it possibly belongs in the list of the best pizzas in Medellín.

The menu at Pizza en Leña

The menu at the pizzeria primarily has pizzas of several types. Classic pizzas like the Pepperoni or Hawaiian cost 17,000 pesos for a medium and 24,000 pesos for a large pizza.

The menu has special pizzas including the Mexicana and Vegetable pizzas that cost 18,500 pesos for a medium and 25,500 pesos for a large pizza.

The menu also has several deluxe pizzas including the Amantes de la Carne and Bacon pizzas that cost 21,500 pesos for a medium and 28,500 pesos for a large.

The menu also includes pita burgers as well as several drinks including sodas, beers and white and red wine.

How to Get There

Pizza en Leña is located in Sabaneta about four blocks from the popular Parque Sabaneta and Iglesia de Santa Ana.

The easiest way to get to Parque Sabaneta is to take the Medellín metro south to the Sabaneta station. The park is located a 10-minute walk east from the metro station.

There are also frequent buses that run from the Sabaneta metro station to Parque Sabaneta, which is near to where Pizza en Leña is located. The cost is only about 1,700 pesos ($0.54).

Or you can ask any taxi driver in Medellín to take you to “Parque Sabaneta,” just about every taxi driver will know where it is.

It is relatively safe to walk from the metro station to Parque Sabaneta as there are many people on the streets during the day, or you can take the short bus ride.

The bottom line is if you happen to be in Sabaneta and craving a good pizza, Pizza en Leña is recommended.
