Office with a view

Medellin Living, the number one tourism blog for the city of Medellín, Colombia, is looking to add a new Staff Writer to do a high volume of assignment-based work on a short-term basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong writing skills to join our team, and contribute to the information available online about Medellín, while earning some extra money at the same time. It’s a part-time, contract position with an expected duration of 3 months.

Responsibilities

The primary role of the Staff Writer is to research and write two to three articles per week, based on a list of assigned topics, including (but not limited to): parks, malls, museums, points of interest, universities, medical clinics, and neighborhoods.

There may be some opportunity to write on topics related to nightlife, restaurants and lifestyle, but this will not be the main focus.

The average article will be 500 to 750 words.

The degree to which the writer will need to visit locations in and around Medellín will depend on his/her prior experience and knowledge of the city.

He/she will also need to provide photos of a similar quality as seen on Medellin Living today (example). The writer’s photos may not contain a watermark. For some stories, David, the Editor in Chief, will be able to provide photos, or if necessary, obtain them himself.

The Staff Writer will primarily be using Asana Teamwork, an online task management program, to communicate with David, and work off a list of assigned topics.

Requirements

1. You must be familiar with and a fan of Medellin Living. If you’re arriving here for the first time because someone thought you’d be a good fit for the job, please spend some time reading through the Archive before submitting your application.

2. You’re at least 21, English is your native language and you possess strong writing skills.

3. You’re currently living in the Medellín metro area, and are willing to commit to the position for the full 3 months. I will be training the new writer in person.

4. You’re comfortable using Google Apps/Docs and Skype.

Desired Skills

  • Comfortable using WordPress.
  • Blogging or journalism experience.
  • You know how to write search engine-optimized content without sounding like a robot. You understand the value and importance of SEO, but you don’t need to be an expert.
  • An intermediate or advanced understanding of Spanish (for online research purposes).

Pay and Perks

The rate paid per article will be based on word count (<500 words, 500-750 words, and 750+ words). Payments will be made on the last day of each month via Paypal.

The person hired will also receive a complimentary membership to the Travel Blog Success course and community ($347 value).

In addition to the pay, and writing experience (good for your resume or portfolio), this is an invaluable opportunity to go behind the scenes and learn from one of Latin America’s top blogs.

  1. Just some thoughts about possible documentaries. You had been talking about dating services; along that line find a foreigner who is dating a Medellin female that will let you follow their relationship on camera. You could do weekly 1/2 hour or so updates. imho I think a lot of people would find it interesting. Also, a shorter stories on the day to day life of native people there. Or it could be of someone who has just moved there from another country. Thanks for all the articles; you are doing a great job!

    • Appreciate the suggestions. I don’t see video happening any time soon, as I don’t have the equipment or the experience, but the other ideas are feasible.
