Partying at Mia VIP Room (Discoteca)

MIA VIP Room is one of the newest discotecas to set up shop in popular Barrio Colombia.

Six months after opening, I was invited to tour the club by American owner Craig Martin.

Craig designed MIA from the ground up, and my first impressions were the quality of construction and design were more akin to what you’d find in a major American city, such as Miami or LA, versus Colombia.

A custom LED lighting system runs from the front facade, throughout the club. As we walked around, the walls and support columns quietly changed colors.

The main room has an open, airy feel which is a nice change from typical Colombian clubs which are wall-to-wall tables and chairs.

The bar features prominently on one side of the club, and is built to also serve as a performance space/stage for visiting singers and dancers.

Of course there’s only so much you can tell about a club at 3 pm in the afternoon, so I rallied my friends to come out on a Saturday night so we could get the full experience.

Absolut VIP
Our drink of choice in the VIP area was Absolut vodka with orange juice.

Nine of us, myself included, took up residence in the comfortable VIP area which is partitioned from the main floor, and slightly elevated, offering clear views of the whole club.

Sitting in the VIP area requires bottle service, and our choices were whiskey, tequila or vodka.

Despite a few of the girls wanting to go for tequila, I’m thankful they were overruled, and we acquired a bottle of Absolut, with orange juice for mixing screwdrivers.

While MIA’s door policy may not be of the stringent VIP variety (a good thing), there are a lot of little details that set the club apart, giving it a more sophisticated feel.

For example, all drinks are served in glasses, versus plastic cups which are common in a lot of the Colombian clubs.

The bathrooms are spotless, the men’s room includes stalls (not just urinals), and there are even hair straighteners in the women’s room.

It’s the little things at Discoteca MIA that show the club is about creating a fun and comfortable space for partying the weekends away.

MIA VIP offers plenty of room for dancing.

And I for one had a lot of fun during our night at Mia.  We drank our bottle of vodka, and danced to the crossover mix of salsa, reggaeton, vallenato and pop music hits.

For Westerners visiting Medellin, or living here, the club offers a much-needed respite from the cheap, wobbly wooden chairs and crowded conditions of most clubs in the city.

Mia VIP is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until 4 am.  On Friday nights, ladies drink for free until 10:30 pm, and don’t have to pay a cover until 11 pm. Drink prices are on par with the prices in most Colombia discotecas.
