When I first moved into Maira’s apartment in Envigado, I would watch the music video channels a lot, which exposed me to a decent amount of popular music.
One of the videos was of an old Mexican singing an understated romantic tune in full sequined costume from sombrero on down.
Turns out that man, Vincente Fernandez, is THE man of Ranchera music, a genre of music originating from Mexico. This song which broke earlier in the year would have young women singing along in clubs like you wouldn’t believe.
He even headlined the 2009 Carnival in Barranquilla, though I didn’t have the chance to see him perform live.
