I’d been living in Ciudad del Rio for several months before I finally walked into the Modern Art Museum, and it wasn’t until a few weeks later that I sat down for dinner at Bonuar Restaurant.

I’d walked past the restaurant numerous times; people enjoying a quiet lunch always seemed to fill up the outdoor terrace.

The interior is well designed, and upon checking out the bar, I was happy to see my favorite libations were stocked (Bombay Sapphire gin and Grey Goose vodka).

The occasion for my first visit was a dinner date, and the service, food, and ambiance were all perfect. We sat outside to enjoy the open air, and had a few glasses of the house red wine, which tasted fine.

Upon looking at the menu, I was surprised to see fare typical of the southern USA, such as gumbo and jerk chicken.

I’m always cautious about getting my hopes up at Colombian restaurants, however the shrimp gumbo was flavorful, and well presented. It would’ve been nice to have a slightly larger portion though.

I made up for the entrée by sharing a rich dessert — it really was a two person affair, as the tart was very heavy.

Around 9pm, a Blues band started to set up and play live music for the restaurant patrons.

They play every Wednesday at Bonuar.  I mine as well have been in Washington, DC. Dinner for two, with wine, dessert, and tip ran about $45.

My second visit was on a Sunday afternoon for brunch, and once again we sat on the terrace to enjoy the warm weather.

My tarta with egg, potato and cheese was good, however I’d probably try something different from the menu next time.

It’s a terrific restaurant, a step above the typical Parque Lleras joint, and I’m looking forward to enjoying it much more often in 2011.
