Barichara: The Prettiest Pueblo in Santander

My favorite door in Barichara

Barichara is considered by many to be the prettiest pueblo in Colombia. In 1978, it was declared a National Monument on account of its architectural heritage dating back hundreds of years.

While I will say it is one of the best-preserved pueblos in Colombia, I can’t go so far as to say it’s the prettiest. Guatape, Salento, and Jardin are also up there in my book.

I took a short bus ride from San Gil to visit, but unfortunately for me it was a Monday, when most restaurants and shops are closed. The heat of the day also ensures few people are walking around in the late morning and afternoon.

If you want to get a real sense of Barichara, I recommend spending the night. It’s far prettier a pueblo than San Gil, and there are lots of restaurants around to feed hungry travelers.

Church of the Inmaculada Concepción in the main plaza

I love the varied colors and textures of the buildings’ facades
Looking down the street toward the main plaza
The Chapel of Jesus sits on a hill overlooking the pueblo
Hormiga culonas (ants) are sold in shops and restaurants throughout the pueblo
I love the faded blue paint on the windows and doors of this building
Entrance to the Pizza y Pita restaurant, which was closed along with most businesses on Monday (the one day I decide to visit)
Beautiful flowers erupt over a wall
Green balconies near the main square
