Visiting the Museo de Arte Moderno

Visiting the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellin (MAMM) has been on my “to-do” list since my first week in the city, but I fell out of sightseeing mode before I made it there.

Luckily, there are couchsurfers like Sarah who are all to happy to show off a little of their city, regardless of how long a guy’s been living there.

As I exited the metro at Suramericana, I bumped into Angela, another couchsurfer who I hadn’t seen in months.

It was a nice surprise, and we took a few minutes to catch up.

Sarah arrived soon after I consumed a tasty chicken pastry and soda at one of the little stands near the metro.

We then proceeded to walk for about 10 minutes until we reached Carlos E. Restrepo Park.

Entrance to the museum was free, and we proceeded to the second floor for a photography exhibit featuring three artists who previously participated in an annual show in Bogotá.

All of the prints were very large, which worked well to fill up the gallery space.

Sarah was the perfect companion for this venture as she is a photography student.  Plus, her English was great, having previously spent three and a half years living in southern California.

After perusing the works in four different spaces, including those by Antioquia locals such as Debora Arango and Hernando Tejada, we exited, and I ran into Adriaan of Colombia Reports who was engaged in a business meeting.

Hanging out in a park on a cool weekday afternoon is not a bad way to conduct meetings.  He recommended coming back to the park on a Friday night when it’s filled with people.

Sarah and I sat down at one of the nearby cafes and got to know each other better.  She just happened to have a photography project with her, which I enjoyed.

Spending time with her reminded me of my college days engaged in the arts.  The majority of my classes were held in dark rooms with a slide projector, but I had a few studio classes too!

When I asked her what she planned to do after college next year, without hesitation, she said “travel” and I knew I was speaking with a kindred spirit.
