5 Undiscovered Caribbean Beaches

The Caribbean region easily boasts some of the finest beaches on the planet and unfortunately, everyone knows it.

Fighting to stake a claim on a beach teeming with tourists can detract from a relaxing vacation and leave visitors longing for a stretch of sand to call their own.

Luckily, not every beautiful Caribbean spot is on the tourist radar; lovely secret hideaways that are every bit as pretty as their more popular counterparts exist throughout the region and are just waiting to be discovered.

1. Cow Wreck Beach, British Virgin Islands

The tiny island of Anegada requires a ferry to visit, but once there the warm Caribbean waters and bright white sands beckon visitors to unwind in an almost perfect tableau of pristine beaches and tiny cottages.

A serviceable open-air bar and miles of deserted sand are all that is required for a relaxing stay.

Visitors to the area can rent a cottage on Anegada or make a home base on one of the more popular islands nearby and visit for a relaxing afternoon on Cow Wreck Beach, the site of a 19th century shipwreck.

2. Mudjin Harbour, Turks and Caicos

This area of the Caribbean is rife with tiny, sparsely inhabited islands that can fulfill the Robison Crusoe longing of any traveler.

For a gorgeous beach on an island with just a handful of inhabitants, the Mudjin Harbour Beach on Middle Caicos provides visitors with miles of sugar-like sand and the characteristic turquoise water that make any Caribbean vacation unforgettable.

3. Parque Nacional Tayrona, Colombia

This national park encompasses more than 115 square miles of ocean and stunning beaches, epitomizing the quintessential Caribbean scenery, yet it boasts surprisingly few tourists.

Visitors can rent self-service cabanas or while away the night in a hammock under the stars. Hiking, swimming and other traditional water sports are available to amuse visitors when they’ve had their fill of sunbathing.

While Tayrona is a veritable secret paradise, it does lack a thriving social scene once the sun sets.

For nightclubs, restaurants, museums and a vibrant nightlife, visitors can head inland to the beautiful red brick city of Medellin, which boasts all the diversions of a clean, modern city as well as a temperate climate.

4. Isla Holbox, Mexico

Cancun is a dazzling haven on the shores of the Yucatan Peninsula, where shopping malls, restaurants, bars and nightclubs tempt visitors with a festival-like atmosphere and superb cuisine.

Its beaches are some of the finest in the Caribbean but can often be teeming with foreigners and locals alike, leaving some visitors longing for a slower pace.

North of Cancun lies Isla Holbox, a 26-mile-long island that is the polar opposite of Cancun’s lively scene.

Visitors to Cancun can have the best of both worlds by staying at the all-inclusive Club Med resort and stealing away by sailboat to the pristine and quiet shores of Isla Holbox for a little well-earned solitude.

5. Roatán, Honduras

Highly popular with scuba divers, this comma-shaped island is a short distance away from the second largest coral reef system in the world.

With spectacular underwater landscapes, wreck diving and tours that allow swimming with dolphins, visitors should be forgiven for having to be coaxed from the water.

Once on land, however, Roatán’s winsome beaches tempt visitors with the allure of their secluded beauty.

When visitors have had their fill of sunbathing, they can wander through lovely art galleries, go horseback riding or visit a tropical butterfly garden.
