Orquídeas, Pájaros y Flores 2014: Beautiful Birds and Flowers

Orchids have such striking colors

My favorite flower is the orchid.

That is the reason the only event I attended at this year’s Feria de las Flores was the Orquídeas, Pájaros y Flores, or Orchids, Birds and Flowers exhibit, open Aug. 6 to 10 at Jardín Botánico.

I went on the last day, hoping to avoid a crowd. I failed. But I saw some pretty birds and lots of pretty flowers.

Like art, don’t bother asking me for a sophisticated analysis of orchids. I can’t give you one.

I read “The Orchid Thief” more than a decade ago so my knowledge is lacking.

It’s all very subjective and there for us to appreciate in our own way. No point of arguing over it.

So I have an idea. In the captions, I’m going to tell you what I think each orchid looks like, kind of like a Rorschach test. Each photo will have a number, except for the bird photos, which will be mixed in to change things up a bit.

For each numbered orchid photo, we would love if you would comment and tell us what you think each one looks like.

Look forward to hearing from you!

1

I see an exotic butterfly when I look at the white ones

2

They look like a cross between starfish and flowers

3

I’m thinking of a kid sticking his tongue out to taunt someone, or maybe the famous Rolling Stones T-shirt

4

From right to left: The red one looks like someone’s mouth, the yellow ones like the face of a monkey, and the purple ones I have no idea

Ok, time for a bird break.

Peekaboo…
…I see you

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

5

It looks like some kind of marine plant, I think, but I can’t think of which one

6

This one kinda has the face of monkey too, only upside down.

7

I see a volcano erupting, and the lava heading downhill, toward the ocean.

8

The white ones look like ducks with flaps around their faces, maybe something out of sci-fi movie. The ones with more purple spots could be their ugly cousins. Ugly ducklings?

Well those were our favorites. We’ll leave you with a couple of pics of pretty birds because they are nice to look at too. After all, bird is the slang term for pretty girl in England.

Wish I could see these in the wild…
…then I wouldn’t have the cage bars obstructing my photo.
