Jesusa, the very first Medellin couchsurfer I met back in February, celebrated her birthday this past Friday night. It was held at the new apartment of Kevin, a fellow American and couchsurfer extraordinaire. Finally, I could attend a party within walking distance of my apartment in Envigado!
Henry and I walked over a little after 9 pm, stopping in Carrefour along the way to pick up a bottle of red Chilean wine. Inside the store, we bumped into Kevin who was hurriedly shopping for pineapples and other assorted food and drinks for the fiesta. Earlier in the day, I had scouted out the location via Google Maps, and it easily took the guesswork out of the walk. We were greeted at the apartment by a big gathering, which slowly grew further as the night continued.
Since Kevin had just moved in a week earlier, it was practically unfurnished, which meant there was plenty of room for a game of Twister, and later dancing! Yes, I look for the opportunities to practice my salsa wherever they may arise, and took a turn or two with Guiomar and Jesusa. While Kevin could not stop making fresh fruit smoothies all night, the snacks on offer consisted primarily of cheese fondue with bread and fruit. Delicioso.
I was completely surprised by the belly dancing show which took place. We’re a long way from Egypt, but apparently the two girls who gave the show perform throughout the city. They were fully decked out in costumes that beat what I saw on a Nile cruise last December. It was a great treat.
The belly dancing concluded, birthday cake was presented, and the night continued. I barely take my camera out these days, so all the photos in this post are courtesy of Henry G. If I did have my camera, I would’ve been sure to get a bit of video and a photo of the sweeping view from Kevin’s large balcony. I felt a little uneasy spending so much time out there, 7 stories high, but it was cooler than the apartment, and like I said, the 180-degree view was great.
Ironically, I didn’t walk home when I left the party around 2 am. I started the walk, but once I reached Las Vegas Avenue, I felt a bit uneasy. There were the occasional cars driving by but no people around. I hailed a taxi instead, satisfied it was a few bucks well spent.
