3 Nights of Halloween in Medellín

The number 3 played a huge role in Halloween.

It’s the year 2013.

It was my third Halloween in Medellín.

It was a three-day weekend because All Saints Day is a national holiday.

It was three consecutive nights of going out, taking pictures.

Let’s get to it.

8:18 p.m., Oct. 31, Mahalo Action Sports Café, Loma del Escodero, Envigado

Our group had seven, with five of us in costume: me as John Lennon, Quinn as Sully from Monster’s Inc., Joanna and Katherine as Minnie Mouse and Tadashi with some kind of hideous mask that I still do not know how to label.

Billy and Katherine’s friend, whose name I don’t remember, did not dress up.

The bar was pretty empty when we got there but by 9:30 it had filled up and there was live music too, a band that covered a mix of pop and rock.

Around 10 p.m. or so, we decided to move the party to a section of Envigado near the main plaza where there are a cluster of bars and clubs.

10:24 p.m., Oct. 31, La Bota del Dia

For some reason, all of us were very tired by this time so the next round of beer we ordered was our last.

It was ok, though. I knew I’d be going out the next night and I didn’t want to expend all of my energy on my first night of Halloween.

9:43 p.m., Nov. 1, Calle 9, Parque Lleras, Poblado

Internations, a worldwide organization of entrepreneurs who form chapters in different cities, was having a Halloween meetup here so, being a member, I decided I should stop by.

I had a beer, said hi to a couple of friends, then left. I always knew where I would end up on this night.

10:28 p.m., Nov. 1, Shamrock, Provenzia, Poblado

The main reason to come here was for the costume contest, and Quinn’s furry outfit won him a bottle of Absolut Vodka.

Until that time, I talked to Zach, the manager, and his buddy Bryan who was visiting from Cartagena, and we took a little break to have a drink down the street with some girls we just met.

Later, Zach bought me a shot of Jameson. Definitely a night at an Irish bar.

10:42 p.m., Nov. 2, Luxury, Barrio Colombia, Poblado

We came to this place for the costume contest too, but it never happened, at least not while we were there.

I had so little energy by this night. It’s rare that I go out two nights in a row, so three nights is unheard of, but I was committed to getting lots of pics this year.

It was harder than I thought, not because it was like last year, with not a lot of people out and about, but because there were so many, it was hard to get a really good shot.

That’s ok. It was nice to witness so many people having so much fun.
