El Peregrino: Where to Find the Best Buñuelos in the Valley

Peregrino Restaurante

As I mentioned in my 2013 Christmas lights story, Sabaneta is known for its bunuelos, and the best place to get them is an easy-to-find restaurant called El Peregrino located in Parque Sabaneta, to the right of the church.

Buñuelos

On full display is a giant vat of heated oil used to deep fry the balls of cheesy-dough.

There’s nothing healthy about these snacks, but they’re a common breakfast snack.

Despite being available everywhere throughout the year, they are especially popular in December around Christmas time.

Each buñuelo costs 2,600 pesos, or about $1.30 and most people will find one more than enough, especially if accompanied by something else.

Viviana and I both ordered chorizo during our December visit. I took mine with beer, but much prefer them in the morning alongside a coffee with milk or hot chocolate.

In addition to buñuelos and chorizo, you can get all the typical dishes, including bandeja paisa (17,000 pesos, $9), frijoles con chicharron (16,000 pesos, $8), and mondongo on the weekends (15,000 pesos, $7.50). Set lunches Monday to Friday cost 11,000 pesos ($5.50).

Aside from Viviana’s conviction that El Peregrino offers the best bunuelos in the Medellin valley, there’s their very unique holiday decorations.
