AIM Network: Shark Tank Meets Medellín

Have you been watching Shark Tank for years and always wanted to know what it’s like to sit in Mark Cuban’s seat?

Today you can have that experience in Medellín at the AIM (Angel Investment Medellín) Network events that take place about five times per year.

Unlike Shark Tank, where budding entrepreneurs are questioned by a panel of just five to six potential investors without an audience, at the AIM Network, anyone can attend as an audience member or ask questions as a panelist.

Another key different from Shark Tank is that there are no deals made inside the meetings directly, but outside the meetings. So, in the likely case that the size of your wallet doesn’t match that of Mark Cuban’s, you can still both learn and contribute at the events.

The events, which takes place in a meeting room at the Parque 10 Hotel, typically feature three to four presentations.

Each presentation is followed by a Q&A session during which the presenters are asked to leave the room, and for 10 minutes, the panelists discuss a few talking points that can be provided as constructive feedback. As a result, each presentation takes about 45 minutes.

Business ideas that were presented at earlier events include everything from an app idea to a new type of organic juice for the local Medellín market.

The AIM Network was founded by Ryan Martin, an American expat, and is now nearly a year old.

The club is open, and there are no “real” memberships. However, people do tend to dress up a bit more than your typical Poblado events. In other words, don’t show up in your shorts and flip-flops, as you might go out of tune with the rest of the audience.
