Reunion At Jaymar Colombian Breeze Restaurant

Jaymar Colombian Breeze Restaurant in Maryland

I met Jacob and his Colombian wife, Astrid, at Jaymar Colombian Breeze restaurant in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  He is currently working back here in the US, though their plan is to return to Medellin by the end of the year.

Apparently the neighborhood was designed by the guy who made that spooky Jim Carey movie, The Truman Show.  Indeed, everything looked a little too perfect.  But inside the small, Cali family-owned restaurant, the menu was 100% Colombian.  Beef empanadas were ordered as an appetizer, and while not as greasy as I was accustomed to in Medellin, they were good.  I ordered blackberry juice and a massive chicken tamale which arrived with an arepa with cheese.  Both were delicious.

Like me, Jacob couldn’t help but compare life in the US with that in Colombia and Medellin.  It felt good to talk with someone who didn’t mind my lamenting.  I mentioned my weekly salsa dancing at Arlington’s Salsa Room/Cecelia’s, so they might join me for a night out, which would be cool too.

Colombian Breeze restaurant was recognized by Washingtonian magazine as one of the 100 best places for “cheap eats” in the metro area.

The restaurant in your post sounds very interesting. We own a small 40 seat london ontario restaurant called Amici Italian Ristorante. We’re located in the heart of downtown london. This area is in the middle point of transition and seems to be lacking any direction or identity. I would gladly take “a little too perfect” over 2 blocks of slums, one block of revitalization (upgraded buildings, restaurants etc.), 2 blocks of corporate buildings, and a missing identity. Visitors to the area have no idea what to make of our area on their first visit.
