Note from Dave: Last year, an old friend of mine who competes in Brazilian Jiujitsu spent time in Medellín. While here, he trained at MMA COLOMBIA. The following is a guest post by Daniela Martínez Soto of MMA COLOMBIA.

Evolving from the Brazilian vale-Tudo style bouts, the mixed martial arts are now the sport which the fastest growing in the last two decades.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports.

The combat sport of vale-Tudo that had developed in Brazil from the 1920s was brought to the USA by the Gracie family in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting.

With new and more protective rules, the American UFC has promoted this sport and is now world-wide spread. Colombia is not the exception, of course, and there are now MMA academies all over the country.

In Medellín, there exists an academy called MMA COLOMBIA which gathers four of the most efficient and ancient disciplines in the fighting arena:

  • Boxing
  • Brazilian Jiujitsu
  • Wrestling
  • Muay Thai

Practicing one or all of these disciplines makes people physically stronger, and mentally tougher too. A regular training involves concentration and self-control, which helps to harmonize the mind, body and soul.

Discipline depends on each person. To enjoy the mental and physical benefits, it is recommended to train two to three times per week, for one to two hours.

MMA COLOMBIA is located at a strategic point of the city, Carrera 50E #10 Sur 173, two blocks away from the Aguacatala Metro station, two blocks away from Avenida Regional and Avenida Las Vegas, in front of Fabrica de Licores de Antioquia.

In MMA COLOMBIA, Spanish and English are spoken, so foreign visitors and athletes should not have any communication problems when training or visiting the academy.

The friendly atmosphere of the academy makes people feel at home, and they go not only to train, but to make new friends, observe training sessions or simply to talk with the teachers and other students.

If these sports sound appealing, come and join MMA COLOMBIA for a free training day. Book your class by phone at (4) 363-1517 or through email mercadeo@mmacolombia.com.co.

  1. Isn’t there a gracie barra gym somewhere in Sabaneta? I can’t seem to find the page anymore… Also, is there a BJJ black belt at MMA Colombia?

  2. Dave, when you get the chance you should also write an article about a Cobrinha Jiu Jitsu Academy affiliate here in Medellin. It is led by instructor Yiyo and he is one of the best in Colombia. They just moved to a new bigger place too and it is really nice in Poblado.

    • I will be in Medellin the Saturday that UFC 208 will be televised. Do you know of any bars/restaurants/ clubs that televises UFC events?
