This is part one of a two-part seres on the 2012 Christmas lights in Medellin. The second part, by Dave, will be posted after he’s had a chance to see them too.

Last year, I missed it.

I left on Dec. 6 for my brother’s house in South Florida, an afternoon flight, long before it got dark and Medellín turned on its Christmas lights. I got back on Jan. 2, before the lights came down, but it wasn’t the same.

I wanted to walk among the happy paisas, to see the city’s magnanimous display, in the parks and trees, along popular streets and atop popular landmarks, and, of course, enveloping the Rio Medellín.

This year, I saw it.

I shared the experience not only with the paisas but with Jen, my sister, who was visiting from Los Angeles. We went light-watching on her last night, after trips to Ciudad Bolívar and the Pacific Coast.

After saying good-bye to her at the airport, I waited for a flight of my own, to Bogotá, to see what the capital city lights looked like. You’ll find out in next week’s post.

For now, enjoy Medellín’s annual Christmas light display, for which I named the 2012 version, “Lights…Christmas…Action!” Happy holidays!
